A Rod in One Hand and a Camera in the Other
Ryan Sparks
Great Lakes salmon fishing often comes with crowds, snagging, riverbanks littered with garbage, and a general hostility among anglers. The stream where this photo was taken winds through cattle pastures and large stands of second growth forest and is left unspoiled by its obscurity. You also have to knock on farmhouse doors and get permission before you can fish it. When the first few salmon trickled in from Lake Ontario a friend and I were waiting. With a camera in one hand and a fly rod in the other I took a series of spray and pray photos as this fish made its first jump. All of them were out of focus, but one. It’s better to be lucky than good.
